With the Masters closing out a great tournament on Sunday, there are more than a few big names at the top of the leaderboard. With that being said, who should you be pulling for to wear the green jacket?
Lee Westwood is currently leading by one stroke. He is a mild mannered Englishman who has found success in the sport. He has been on the Ryder Cup team, and appears to be a good guy. But he will not be the one who the crowd throws their support behind. Good story, but not here. Not for the Masters. Not on our turf. Sorry, Lee.
How about Fred Couples? He is the oldest player in contention, and a perennial fan favorite. A great guy, a great player, and certainly a sentimental favorite. But people are not talking about him winning it that much either. Maybe it is his age, or the fact that he has not been as relevant as much lately, but he is not the big story either.
No, Couples is not the story. We all know what the story is this week. It is the same story that we have had to listen to for the last four months. How will Tiger do? How will Tiger fare? Why isn’t everyone asking a different question, like who in the blue hell cares how Tiger does, or what Tiger does? This is not someone who we should be rooting for, people.
His language has still been terrible on the course. His attitude is awful when he does not do well. I get that he is the ultimate competitor. I have no problem with that fact. Heck, no one should accept losing. But if you don’t make every shot, which even Tiger does not, then show some class out there. He claims to be a sex addict following the revelations of his infidelity and obsession with hookers. What he is is a poor excuse for an athlete with the utmost talent.
Enter Phil Mickelson. A man who has never been involved in extra marital affairs. A man who has never been shown on TV swearing and cursing. A man who has always been liked and respected by his peers. This, people, is a man who we should all be rooting for to win.
Mickelson is a true family man. He is always spending time with his wife, Amy, and their children. Amy is battling cancer, so Phil took some time off to be with his family. This is the tournament he has enjoyed most, because it is the first one that Amy and his family has attended since she was diagnosed with cancer. Mickelson has even seemed more relaxed on the golf course, and it is because his hero, his wife, has been by his side. Just like he has been by hers throughout everything.
If Mickelson wins, he and his family will celebrate together. If Tiger wins, where does he go? To Hooters?
Phil Mickelson should be getting all of the media attention, not Tiger. Phil Mickelson should be the one who we are all rooting for as he approaches the 18th hole on Sunday, not Tiger. Phil Mickelson is the class act and should be the face of golf in America…not Tiger.
So, on late Sunday afternoon, the gallery at Augusta should be chanting for Lefty.
Not Tiger.

SO glad Phil won! Wish Tiger would just go away!
