After the New England Patriots lost Super Bowl XLVI to the New York Giants, Gisele Bundchen- famed supermodel wife of quarterback Tom Brady – ripped leading wide receiver Wes Welker. After New England dropped another ugly game to the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game, it was Welker’s wife’s turn to come out and rip in to another player.
But at least she ripped in to a member of the opposition. I guess that is what they call progress.
Anna Burns Welker took to Twitter following the Patriots’ miserable 28-13 defeat at home against the Ravens. Her target just happened to be the man who was poked fun at all throughout the week with retirement countdown billboards.
I am, of course, referring to Baltimore linebacker, Ray Lewis.
“Proud of my husband and the Pats,” Welker posted on her Facebook page. “By the way, if anyone is bored, please go to Ray Lewis’ Wikipedia page. 6 kids 4 wives. Acquitted for murder. Paid a family off. Yay. What a hall of fame player! A true role model!”
Ouch. Tell us how you really feel.
This is nothing new when it comes to the wives and girlfriends [WAGS] of the Patriots. As I mentioned earlier, Bundchen absolutely laid in to Welker for what she perceived were drops that cost her man and his team the game.
“You (have) to catch the ball when you’re supposed to catch the ball,” Bundchen said shortly following another loss in a key game by the Pats. “My husband cannot (bleeping) throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time. I can’t believe they dropped the ball so many times.”
Gisele would eventually apologize at the behest of the team and her husband. In another sign of progress and maturation, it did not take Welker quite as long to issue an apology to Lewis.
“I’m deeply sorry for my recent post on Facebook,” Welker said in a statement sent to Larry Brown Sports. “I let the competitiveness of the game and the comments people were making about a team I dearly love get the best of me.
“My actions were emotional and irrational and I sincerely apologize to Ray Lewis and anyone affected by my comment after yesterday’s game,” Welker continued. “It is such an accomplishment for any team to make it to the NFL playoffs, and the momentary frustration I felt should not overshadow the accomplishments of both of these amazing teams.”
Well, the Ravens truly were amazing on Sunday. The Patriots were simply in amazement throughout the second half.
If New England’s downward spiral continues, as this team seems to be severely outplayed and outcoached in critical games as of late, you have to wonder which Patriots’ wife or girlfriend will be the outspoken one after the team gets knocked out of the playoffs next season?
That is, if they even reach the postseason.
