NFL Rumors: Could San Francisco 49ers Trade Alex Smith To Cleveland Browns?

As the San Francisco 49ers prepare to face the Atlanta Falcons for the right to play in Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, they will be doing so with Colin Kaepernick under center. Having taken over midway through the season, Kaepernick has been an offensive savior for Jim Harbaugh and the ‘Niners, meaning former starting quarterback Alex Smith will become expendable. It may just turn out that Smith could be reunited with a familiar face in a new place in 2013, as the 49ers could trade smith to the Cleveland Browns, where he would be reunited with new offensive coordinator, Norv Turner.

It is already a well known fact that the new GM in Cleveland is not exactly the biggest fan of incumbent Browns’ starting quarterback, Brandon Weeden. It is also known that Turner was the offensive coordinator with the 49ers when Smith broke into the league. After throwing just 1 touchdown pass in his rookie season in 2005, Turner helped Smith bounce back in 2006 and toss 16 touchdown passes.

Considering his career high is just 18, it can be argued that Smith enjoyed his greatest success under the guidance and tutelage of Turner. It may make sense to try and put that theory to the test in Cleveland in 2013.

If nothing else, it could give Weeden the push he needs to take the next step forward. It is also more or less understood that Kaepernick will enter the 2013 NFL season as the unquestioned starting quarterback in San Francisco, regardless of what takes place in the NFC Championship Game in Atlanta on Sunday.
