2013 MLB Draft: 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft Results Highlighted By Mark Appel, Kris Bryant And Jonathan Gray

The 2013 MLB First Year Player Draft is underway, with the Houston Astros selecting Stanford Cardinal starting pitcher Mark Appel with the No. 1 overall pick. The first round results continued to come in fast and furious, with the Chicago Cubs pulling off a slight surprise by selecting San Diego Toreros third baseman and the nation’s leading home run hitter, Kris Bryant, with the No. 2 pick. Jonathan Gray, starting pitcher from the Oklahoma Sooners, fell to the Colorado Rockies with the third pick overall.

As for some early observations from the first day of the three-day event, Appel certainly made the smart decision to return to Stanford for another year after being selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the No. 8 pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. When it so often goes wrongly for college football and basketball athletes who return to school instead of entering the draft early, it worked out quite well for Appel, as well as players such as Gray, Bryant and countless others. Another player who benefitted from returning was North Carolina Tar Heels third baseman Colin Moran, who was drafted No. 6 overall by the Miami Marlins, which comes as a mixed blessing. The bad news is that he was drafted by the Marlins. The good news is that as soon as he shows big league promise, Jeffrey Loria will trade him for a new fishing pole and another prospect who he will do the same thing to three years down the road.
