NCAA Football Week 6: Connor Shaw To Start For South Carolina Gamecocks Vs. Kentucky Wildcats

After initially diagnosing quarterback Connor Shaw with a shoulder sprain suffered last Saturday that was expected to sideline him for the next 2-3 weeks, South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier now says that Shaw will start this Saturday against the Kentucky Wildcats.

“Our trainer had him out two to three weeks,” Spurrier said earlier this week. “You’ll have to ask our trainers how he made such a miraculous recovery.”

Miraculous or not, Shaw will start this week’s game for South Carolina, one week after the ‘Cocks narrowly defeated the Central Florida Knights on the road one week ago. While many may have pointed to that as a game they expected S.C. to dominate, UCF is an extremely underrated team. In college football, a win is a win. Especially, on the road.

Shaw’s return to the field means that Dylan Thompson is relegated to a reserve role once again. But, with Shaw’s propensity to get injured, Thompson is always one play away from returning to under center. Spurrier will often go with both quarterbacks at certain points in games, but it has been Shaw who has been the more impressive overall player through the first part of the 2013 NCAA Football season. He moves the chains with his arm and his legs, although the running portion of his game is also often the cause for his injuries.

Against Kentucky on Saturday, Spurrier himself could probably take the majority of snaps and still lead South Carolina to victory. Who knows what the ‘Ol Ball Coach is still capable of doing on the football field?
