The Boston Celtics are in a complete rebuilding process while they await the healthy return of Rajon Rondo as well as future NBA Drafts. After dismantling the team following the departure of head coach Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers, the Celtics dealt the rest of their valuable pieces to the Brooklyn Nets for a plethora of draft picks and players. Now, while Boston continues to wait for Rondo while also fielding trade offers for its embattled point guard, New York continues to pester them with phone calls about nearly everyone on the roster, including Rondo. The latest offer does not include No. 9 for the green and white, but the latest NBA rumors surfacing are saying that we could see the Knicks trade Amar’e Stoudemire to the Celtics for Gerald Wallace and Courtney Lee.
Overall, the trade could make sense for both teams, although for different reasons and at different times. Immediately, it would make the Knicks a better team with healthier options. Stoudemire is a huge injury question mark, and probably will remain one throughout the rest of his career, however it may last. The Celtics deal away two players who could produce right now, but they are in a rebuilding process. Stoudemire has a massive contract, but it is one that is just partially guaranteed for next season. Wallace and Lee are guaranteed through the 2015-2016 NBA season.
No deal is expected to be consummated any time soon, with the possibility that nothing gets done or that it goes right up until the 2014 NBA Trade Deadline in February. Boston would love to accept a deal such as this one sooner rather than later, as it will provide a much more clear picture heading into the deadline, as well as what they will want to do with Rondo going forward, once he returns to the lineup some time in December.
Overall, the trade could make sense, but it may still need some tweaking in order to get it done and work best for both the Celtics and the Knicks.
The Celtics have to at least thow in Jeff Green to make it interesting for the Knicks being that they would be compromising their 2015 cap space.
