In the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Team USA Hockey came within a few shots of walking away with a gold medal in both men’s and women’s ice hockey. Ultimately, they both fell short to Team Canada in heart breaking defeats on their opponents’ home ice. Four years later, the venue may have changed, but the matchup and heated rivalry remains the same. On Thursday, Team USA will take on Team Canada in the gold medal game in women’s ice hockey, with the same two countries facing off less than 24 hours later in the men’s tournament, only that game will only be a semi-final contest.
Team USA is obviously hoping that both results will be different from what they were four years ago in Vancouver, So far, both have played very well throughout the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Team Canada does hold a victory over Team USA in the women’s preliminary round, where nothing but pride and seedings were at stake. When it comes to these two programs, there is never a time where one can truly say that any of their matchups are meaningless.
That certainly will not be the case over the next two days, with much more than pride at stake. On Thursday, the women are looking to go to the podium with their National Anthem blaring and a gold medal being draped around their neck. The men need to win on Friday and then again on Sunday against the winner of the Sweden vs. Finland game in order to experience the same honor. It all begins within the hour, and will conclude with one country having the opportunity to make the other nation go home quite unhappy, having to hold on to that loss for the next four years.
