Carmelo Anthony has until tomorrow to let the New York Knicks know whether or not he plans to opt out of his current contract and test the free agent market. While Phil Jackson is imploring ‘Melo to wait at least one more year before deciding to opt out, the potential prized free agent is considering all options. While many people will that if Anthony leaves, it would most likely be to join either the Chicago Bulls, Dallas Mavericks or Miami Heat, one current member of the Boston Celtics said that we should not rule out Anthony signing with the Boston Celtics. That, at least, according to Rajon Rondo.
“You never know what (Celtics president) Danny (Ainge) is capable of doing,” Rondo said on ESPN’s “Numbers Never Lie.” “I can’t tell you much. We want to turn it around next year. Danny has a lot of wiggle room the past couple of years with what he’s done in the draft. Hopefully [Anthony] won’t go to Chicago.
“I think after we try to get ‘Melo and an additional piece, who knows? The sky’s the limit. I plan to try to win a championship every year. With ‘Melo, I think it’s very possible.”
Is it likely that the Celtics sign Anthony? No, not at all. Is it possible? Sure, anything is possible. Kevin Garnett taught us all that lesson six years ago. Ainge also proved that he can pull off major moves all during one offseason that immediately place the Celtics in contention for an NBA championship.
But, for those hoping 2014 will be like 2007, with Boston acquiring Anthony and Kevin Love and pairing them with Rondo for the Celtics’ version of the new Big Three, I would caution against it. While it is at least possible that the Celtics could acquire either Anthony or Love – with the better odds falling with Love – it is nearly impossible that Boston will bring in a pair of perennial All-Stars this Summer.
It is far more likely that fail to bring in any.
