The NBA Rumors are swirling in full effect, with the free agency period officially open for business. While teams may begin discussing deals with free agents today, nothing can be officially completed until July 10. That means that while sales pitches are being made to players such as LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Kyle Lowry and countless others, the only thing we know for sure is that the Cleveland Cavaliers have signed Kyrie Irving to a max five-year contract extension, worth a reported $90 million. Aside from that, everything else is pure speculation.
* According to John Krawczynski, the Houston Rockets, Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Golden State Warriors will all target James and Anthony, but will set their sights on acquiring Kevin Love from the Minnesota Timberwolves if they are unable to sign either marquee free agent.
* Ken Berger reported that Anthony will meet with representatives from the Dallas Mavericks, as well as the Bulls, Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers. The New York Knicks expect that they will have the final opportunity to make one last pitch to Melo before he signs.
* ESPN says that while the Lakers would love to convince James and Anthony to leave their current teams and join Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles, but their back-up plan may be signing Chris Bosh and bringing back Pau Gasol.
* Marc Stein reported that the Toronto Raptors may get the first crack at signing Lowry, but David Aldridge says that the Houston Rockets would love to strike quickly when it comes to making a play for the former Villanova Wildcats point guard.
* Stein also reports that Paul Pierce could be a hot commodity on the open market, and the Brooklyn Nets free agent could be targeted by the Los Angeles Clippers, Portland Trailblazers, Memphis Grizzlies, Bulls, Mavs & Rockets.
* Adrian Wojnarowski reports that the Miami Heat are very interested in signing Luol Deng, but Berger said that they will receive some competition from the Clippers, Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks.
* According to the Sporting News, the Heat will also look to bolster their bench – as well as their chances on bringing back the Big Three – by reaching out to Vince Carter, Shawn Marion and Steve Blake.
