While NBA rumors once had Ray Allen pondering retirement, it is now being reported that the sharpshooter will return to play at least one more season. Allen is looking to join a team that will contend for an NBA Championship in 2014-2015, meaning he will be sporting a new uniform. No offense to Allen’s former teams such as the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, but none of those three teams will be competing for a title next season. I suppose you could say that the Oklahoma City Thunder are a former team of Allen’s as well, but they were the Seattle Super Sonics at that time, so I am eliminating them from the conversation. Although, they would be a very good fit. Still, with that being said, it appears most likely that Allen will join his former Heat teammate and friend, LeBron James, and sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
For his 19th and likely final NBA season, I fully expect Allen to sign with the Cavs to compete for a third ring. Sure, he could entertain thoughts of joining the likes of the San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets or Los Angeles Clippers, but I just don’t see it happening. I figured that there is really no reason in listing any other Eastern Conference teams, because the Cavs are such heavy favorites. With the Paul George injury, I don’t see the Indiana Pacers in play. The Chicago Bulls are good, but nobody knows if they can stay healthy. I like young teams such as the Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets, but neither is winning a title too quickly.
Out west, the Dallas Mavericks are a good team, as are the Portland Trailblazers, Memphis Grizzlies and Golden State Warriors, but none of them are likely to reach the NBA Finals next season either. That means that Allen is really down to a handful of teams, but ultimately predicting that he will sign with any team other than Cleveland would be foolish.
